Why racing games are so important

Not just racing games either, all sports games.

Video games are a massive part of many peoples lives, and that isn’t a bad thing. It provides a platform for people to be social, relax, and have fun. So when games are created to mimic real life sports, fans get pretty excited. F1 2017 is being released at the end of August. It’s supposed to be the best one yet and from the looks of the gameplay that has been released, that’s probably true. So why do these games matter so much?

They provide an experience that nothing else can. No live race or meet up with drivers can give you the chance to fully experience what the drivers feel. Obviously the feel isn’t the same but building a career and competing side by side with the best in the world is pretty cool. Having your name above Lewis Hamilton on the time sheets makes you feel like a superstar.

Racing games like F1 2017 have been around for quite some time. You can look all the way back to the 70’s for some truly retro racing games. From arcades to console gaming, it has evolved into something that people can now do for a living. Other sports have had games to go along with real life as well. The difference is that with games like NBA 2k, the detail and how much you can do has been improved far earlier than F1 games.

My career in NBA 2k12 was awesome, shoe deals, billboard ads, press conferences. It had it all. Only recently has F1 given fans similar features. In 2016 we got a taste of what it could be like with your agent, contracts, race goals, and other features. 2017 will hope to provide even more on top of that and fans could not be happier.

These games don’t just give you more features. It allows fans to really get involved with the sport and know tiny details that you may otherwise not know. From tire wear programs to fuel consumption, it gives you information that is somewhat comparable to real life. That is why these games are so important. The development and continuous improvement of the games has never been so important, especially when access is so limited at real life events.

Fans will constantly want new features, some of which will be harder than others. For example, some would like the ability to walk around the paddock. This would be amazing and could open so many doors, literally, but with the majority of users playing with a wheel it can get tricky. Benjamin Daly brought up that great point, which is overlooked by many. Benjamin runs a popular YouTube channel called Tiametmarduk that revolves around these racing games.

Looking into the future, these games could get pretty insane with things like virtual reality on the rise. Fans will have plenty to look forward to and for now, the features we have will have to do.
