Workplace Skills in Action

Baxter International Inc. is a Fortune 500 American healthcare company that produces medical equipment. My father is a CAD-CAM Specialist at the local location and provided me with insight on the tasks he completes daily and the company as a whole.

Daily Tasks

His daily tasks consist of updating and maintaining a CAD Database for sustainable manufacturing and new product development. Within the database he creates, maintains, and updates fixtures drawings and other documentation to ensure timely manufacturing of products to specifications. He also works with cross-functional teams in India. He assigns permission and access to files that need to be completed and then reviews the documents.

Communication

Communication within the organization consists of email, instant messaging, webx, and video conference calls. Every day there are daily standup meetings within his group to determine the status of task completion. Half of the team is located in Illinois. Every week they have a staff meeting through video conference call to discuss project status and tasks that need to be completed, changes to execute, and any questions or concerns that arise. They must clearly communicate information and ensure there is a clear understanding.

Soft skills exercised

Critical skills and analytical skills are implemented daily. Projects include analyzing data and applying critical thinking to come up with solutions to problems. Contributing to these skills, he provides continuous improvement efforts and focuses on improving safety, improving quality, and reducing cost.

Outsourcing effects

All service-related activities at the nearby Baxter location are being outsourced overseas, eliminating numerous positions in the company, greatly affecting the local economy. This greatly affected the workplace atmosphere. Employee morale has taken a turn for the worst. All employees are now in fear of losing their jobs, causing them to lose focus on their tasks as well lose their sense of belonging in the company.
