Gladwell has long been a writer that I’ve been following, from his podcasts to other books like The Bomber Mafia. The Tipping Point was a book that was gifted to me a few years ago after a friend had moved away, sitting untouched on my shelf. In turn, close to a move myself, I actually gifted this book to another as well, untouched.

I felt a little guilty. I had every intention of reading this book.

So, despite having given this hand-me-down book into its next cycle, I dove into my library’s online collection (of ebooks and audiobooks) and waited in line to borrow and listen to this book. A commitment!

I’m so glad I did.

The book presents an idea that we’re all likely already familiar with, from seeing it in sinusoidal graphs in biology class, to self-improvement books that talk about making habits that adhere to the 80/20 principle. The tipping point is the “magic” of focussing your efforts on the bit of action that tips over towards the most change.

This, dear readers, can be for the better, or as we’ve learned through witnessing superspreaders during the pandemic, for the worse. It all depends on which way we tip.

Let’s start with my reaction to the premise of this book: The Tipping Point. Tipping points is not a new concept, but the way Gladwell describes the Tipping Point is what’s important. I mentioned above the sinusoidal curves in biology, to the exponential graphs you might have plotted with a graphing calculator in school.
