3 mistakes I did while being in college

I was so impatient back then. I couldn’t wait to get my degree and sail away to find a full-time job in my field, earn money and start being independent and successful adult. Not a thought in my head that college would be the light version of everything that awaits ahead, but much more easier to balance and maintain. I would gladly go back and change some things, so I could enjoy that period more and to make a better use of time and situations I was in. So here is a list, so you don’t have to go through it like I did.

That’s right. I was too busy being perfect at everything, chasing high grades and investing so much time and energy into something that in the end didn’t feel so rewarding. I am not saying you should postpone all your tasks and take a vacation, but a little break from work here and there won’t kill you.

I will always regret that I didn’t hang out with my friends more, since I don’t see them that often these days (we live far away from each other now, and then we were basically neighbours in dormitory). Socialising refills my batteries, and if I did that then, I’d probably be more happier during that time. Just take a break here and there, specially if you are crushing your daily tasks, you can end up being more productive and rested. Be good to yourself.

2. I traded my health to hit all deadlines

Please take this one very seriously:

I had so many sleepless nights to make my seminars perfect, studied whole night until morning for the exams because I wanted to pass if from first try, drank so many energy drinks and coffee that I am basically immune to caffeine at this point, and most importantly, I’ve lost my mental health.

At the end of my bachelor’s degree, I was writing a final thesis and started having anxiety attacks every night because I couldn’t find all answers, I couldn’t do any work since I had zero concentration while anxious and ended up having emotional breakdown a day before defending my thesis. The web application I made didn’t work properly so I had to fix it, didn’t sleep at all that night. I didn’t want to postpone it and finish it in peace, I had to get it at first due date there was. I passed, and honestly, I was feeling so empty after graduation. I think I would probably kill myself that summer if I didn’t seek for help. After conversation with my doctor, she told me my situation is psychiatric case. I ended up on antidepressants. Trust me, it is not worth it. I still feel the consequences up to this day.

3. I didn’t “learn” anything else

Even though I can thank all my professors and colleagues for knowledge I have today, that didn’t really help me in my current job. I saw many people who are successful by just getting the courses and making their own projects. I work in IT industry, and I believe if I have invested more time into learning something of my personal interest, I’d have better understanding for certain topics that we were learning back then.

If the study you are enrolled into is something you love, invest more time into it by exploring the subjects that are compelling to you. Maybe something you like will be in the 4th semester, why not look it up now? Topics that intrigue you will stay longer in your memory, and one day they might be useful in your career. Learn something new, you can only benefit from it.
