The Perennial Garden

Rich with secrets and surprises is the perennial garden. Through long winters cold, swathed in blankets thick and white, she slumbers deep, waiting. Through dark death felt nights she sleeps. Not…

Recruiter Magnet

To move up the ranks in management consulting, it’s more or less mandatory that you have a specialisation. I had spent the better part of a two-year consulting career being pulled onto projects without direction, hoping to find something that clicked. Eventually I wound up on a design thinking project, and I loved it. I thought the approach to problem solving made sense and I felt immense pleasure re-engaging the creative side of my brain that had been collecting dust since art class in high-school.

Completing the ten-week course was colossal. My day job was uncharacteristically busy at the time so the course on top of my regular project work had me effectively working a seven-day week. This left little space to go into the depth on the Academy Xi project that I was accustomed to. But to my surprise we arrived at as meaningful insights and solutions as I had on other, more immersive projects. This was the most significant learning I got out of the course — while you can take your time with design thinking, there is still so much value that can come from short, targeted sprints if you nail the process.

After graduating I was eager to get thrown on to more design thinking projects. Unfortunately, as is the nature of consulting, my company didn’t have a pipeline for this kind of work at the time. I was also receiving a lot of interest from recruiters after adding the Academy Xi training to my LinkedIn profile, so I started considering external opportunities.

There was no shortage of roles available, but it wasn’t easy to find the right one. I had conversations with a handful of companies that I didn’t think were the right fit for me and vice versa. But a couple of months into this little adventure I found a company that was interested in my particular skillset and that approached design thinking in the way I wanted to work.

I’m still settling into my new role but I’m loving being able to focus solely on design thinking. I have plenty more to learn but I have felt really confident in my abilities. I’d put this down to previous experience but also largely to the IP I inherited from the Academy Xi course and to leaning on my two instructors who I still bother today and who continue to be incredibly helpful.
