Making Sense of Eternity

At the cornerstone of the human dynamic is a passionate pursuit of meaning and fulfillment in life. There are thousands of theories that attempt to explain our eternal significance as we all search for assurance that we are not temporary. Perpetual reincarnation. An eternal afterlife. After all, what’s 100 years in the context of the universe?

We all want to establish a legacy and find a place for ourselves in time. However, many long-standing ideas corroborated within various religious groups don’t leave me with a confident sense of meaning and permanence. And when the grand dynamics of the universe remain largely unknown to us, it’s hard to find a foolproof theory.

I find it effective to drop all the lavish storytelling and simply find comfort in one simple truth. This world is ridiculously fragile — it’s difficult to place meaning in anything as it could wash away at any moment. But there’s one thing that’s fundamental to your presence in this universe — you. Your own existence. You have a unique identity, and you always will have had that identity. No matter how the future of the universe unfolds, you always will have existed in a profoundly unique way. You are forever true. So go ahead, smile — that’s some pretty cool shit.
